The Phatt Chef Roadside Diner and B&B

The Phatt Chef Roadside Diner and B&B has been sold to Paul Ellis and henceforth will be known as THE BORDER POST

We cater to families looking for a fun filled holiday in the Drakensberg as well as being an ideal stop over for travelers between Cape Town & Kwa Zulu Natal, Gauteng & Durban, Free State & the Natal Midlands. We also do package deals for groups and clubs, especially cycle teams, mountain bikers and motor bike enthusiasts. We have access to little traveled roads and trails in the area as well lots of local knowledge, so call us and chat about your next trip to the Northern Drakensberg and Eastern Free State.

The Border Post is an ideal venue for exploring the Drakensberg & Eastern Free State. Situated on the R74, we are the alternate, toll free route to the busy N3. Find us at the top of Oliviershoek Pass, half way between Harrismith & Bergville.

Attractions in the area include Sterkfontein Dam, Retief Klip, Kaalvoetvrow Monument, Tugela Falls & Gorge Walk (2nd highest waterfall in the world), Royal Natal National Park Drakensberg World Heritage Site, Tugela Vaal Pumped Storage Scheme, San (Bushman) Rock Art, World Class Yellowfish Angling.

THE PHATT CHEFROADSIDE DINER and BED & BREAKFAST, serves breakfast, lunch and tea, coffee and scones & cakes to passing tourists, locals, as well as in-house guests. We serve dinner, by reservation, to our in-house guests.

The Phatt Chef Roadside Diner has an innovative new menu, largely influenced by the slow food movement, fresh, local seasonal ingredients and respect for the origin of foodstuff.

New additions include the range of Simple Simon Real Puff Pastry Pies, hearty casseroles & curries in winter, the simple burger, elevated to new heights with juicy patties, caramelized onion and our own tomato relish & pickles.

Menus change seasonally and are dependent on local produce.

Situated at The Border Post, (a joint venture in the Northern Drakensberg between 3 properties), this used to be home to the renowned Caterpillar Catfish Cookhouse, situated on top of Oliviershoek Pass on the R74, right on the Free State / Kwa Zulu Natal border, here in our magnificent mountains. The provincial border runs through our property hence the name THE BORDER POST. Comprising comfortable B&B rooms, or self catering cottages (Book through Windmill Farm Cottages), and a rustic trout lodge on 2 private dams called Selethwane Trout Cottages. All rooms en-suite with incredible views over the Drakensberg range of mountains, from Champagne Castle in the south to the Amphitheater in the north.

We are adjacent to the Royal Natal National Park, where the world's second highest waterfall, The Tugela Falls are found, plunging over 900 m down the face of the Amphitheater into the Tugela Gorge.

The Sterkfontein Dam lies on our northern boundary and fly fishermen come from all over the world to bag their "Yellow" on dry fly or beetle.

We are ideally situated for tourists visiting the Drakensberg World Heritage Site, travelling en route to or from Kwa Zulu Natal and the Cape or St Lucia. Gauteng & OR Tambo Airport are within a 3 hour journey,  while the N 5 & the N 3 are less than a 30 min drive from us. We are only 100kms from Clarens and Golden Gate National Park

NB The R74 has been fully restored and is now open.
