COOKING COURSES @ THE PHATT CHEF

 

Chef Patron Simon Kerr runs a number of cooking courses throught the year. Linked to the seasons, the cooking themes take into account the changing products available.

 

If it's Winter, expect Venison and stews, hearty soups & breads, while Summer's lessons encompas al fresco menus and crunchy salads and pate`s.

 

Course are taylor made to suit the participants and can be structured in any one of several ways:

  • FUN GETAWAY WEEKENDS FOR GROUPS OF FRIENDS

  • BACHELOR / ETTE PARTIES WITH A DIFFERENCE

MOUNTAIN BIKING @ THE BORDER POST

 

Most keen mountain bikers know that the Northern Berg is home to some amazing MTB trails, not only the home of the Berg & Bush, but also part of the route for the Durban Dash, Joburg2C and so on. Our inhouse guests have exclusive use to most of the track for Day 1 of the Berg & Bush, including Solly's Folly and Great Wall My China. We also have acess to 60 odd km of pristine tractor & jeep tracks, cattle paths and cross country area to ride in that overlooks Sterkfontein Dam, Royal Natal National Park & the Amphitheatre as well as the opportunities to explore Retief's Pass, Bezeidenhout's Pass and the lesser traveled farm roads of the Eastern Free State!

We have access to private farm land where you can scramble to your hearts content both for bikes & quads! We can also lay out excursions that use lesser traveled farm roads of the Eastern the Northern Drakensberg & Eastern Free State, incorporating Retiefs Pass, Bezedenhouts Pass to name but a few. These trails can be guided or self driven, dependant on your level of expertise, and range from a few hours of fun and mud to all outings that will tax the more experienced rider.

As the sport of trail running starts to get more popular, one would be hard pressed to find a more scenic area to run in. Already home to some of SA's top mountain races, we are situated ideally for just a few training runs or to base yourself here next time you participate in any one of the following events:

HIKING @ THE BORDER POST

 

With over 4000 Ha of farm land, nature reserve and national park on our very doorstep, there are endless opportunities for hikers, from a gentle stoll to the dam and back, to the more taxing route to One Tree Hill and culminating in the climb and traverse of Selethwane, ending up in the Cavern / Montusi valley where arrangements can be made to collect you if the prospect of the return journey is too daunting.

FISHING @ THE BORDER POST

 

Our northern boundary is the Sterkfontein Dam, arguably one of the top angling sites for Yellowfish in the world!! YES, anglers come from all over the world to try and snag a Yellowfish on fly in our back garden. The season runs from October to late April, with the premier months being December thru March.

Situated as we are, in the heart of historic Kwa Zulu Natal & the Free State, we have acess to several renouned tour guides who specialise in the following:

  • Early San Populations of the Drakensberg & San Rock Art (Bushman Paintings)

  • Geology, Archeology & Anthropology in the area, including Dinosaur Hunts, Basotho Cultural Village visits and rock & fossil tours.

  • Voortekkers, Zulus, Anglo-Zulu Wars, Anglo Boer Wars including guided tours to battle sites and siege sites (Ladysmith, Spionkop, Blaaukrantz, Weenen, Harrismith, Riemland, Brandwater Basin etc).

Seven Great Adventures at one fantastic venue, central to all Northern Berg Resorts. Experience the thrill of sliding 60kmph on 900m of cable between 7 forested platforms, throwing triple back flips on the bungee bounce or flying on a circus trapeze. For a bigger thrill climb Africa’s highest wooden spiral staircase and free fall 17m on the King Swing. If you’re happier with your feet on the ground there’s quad tours or paintball, and included in every ticket purchase is access to the new Kid’s Adventure Zone’s Duelling Zip Lines and Ninja Warrior Jr. Course.

And when you’re done with that, there’s the coffee shop, with a giant cappuccino and killer chocolate cake!
